Where Does CBD Come From?

While there are a number of cannabis plant variations found naturally, all of these contain the compound of CBD.

Some of the most common methods of CBD extraction include a liquid solvent, CO2 extraction, or oil solvent.

CBD Manufacturing: Liquid, Oil, or CO2 Extraction
Making CBD oil requires you have the right strain of cannabis plant and optimum levels of CBD.
At present, the most popular method of CBD extraction is through liquid solvent.
Through this method, the flower materials of the cannabis plant are stripped down and placed in a container.
From here, a liquid solvent separates the cannabinoid compounds and flavors from the flower material. The most common liquid solvents used are ethanol, hexane, butane, or isopropyl alcohol.
After soaking in this liquid solvent, the cannabinoid compounds and flavors then transfer to the liquid. This liquid is put through an evaporation process where only a concentrated CBD oil gets left behind.
The reason this method is so popular is because of its simplicity.
However, there are some downsides.
Some manufacturers have concerns over how the liquid solvents can leave trace impurities in the finished CBD oil product.
Some liquid solvents can also remove chlorophyll from the plant as well as cannabinoid compounds and flavors. This can leave the CBD oil tasting quite bitter.
However, with the right type of solvent and meticulous timing, these negative effects are usually countered. This is why liquid solvent extraction remains the most popular method today.
Carbon Dioxide Extraction
This extraction method isn’t as popular but can make for a purer CBD oil product. However, you need specialized processing equipment.
Carbon dioxide (CO2) is an amazing compound used in any form – solid, liquid, or gas. But you must keep it at a very specific temperature and pressure in order for it to function properly.
So, how does this fancy piece of equipment work?
The processing equipment has three chambers. Solid CO2 in the form of dry ice gets placed in the first chamber. Cannabis plant material gets placed in the second chamber, while the third chamber contains the separated CBD oil product.
The solid CO2 is pumped into the second chamber, which is kept at a very specific pressure and temperature. From here, the CO2 converts into a liquid-gas form, known as supercritical CO2.
This liquid-gas CO2 runs through the plant material, extracting its CBD compounds and flavors, which then transfer into chamber 3.
Once this cannabinoid mixture is pumped into chamber 3, it’s kept at a very specific pressure and temperature. This ensures the CO2 gas rises to the top of the chamber, leaving behind the liquid CBD oil at the bottom.
This pure, CBD-rich oil is then collected and bottled for consumption.
The benefits of this method of CBD extraction are second-to-none. For one, it’s far quicker. There’s minimal risk of CBD oil contamination, and it makes for a purer product.
However, the processing equipment is expensive, and this is why it’s only used by professional CBD manufacturers.
This is a very simple form of CBD extraction that dates back millennia. It involves a process of decarboxylation and store-bought oils such as olive oil.
Most commonly used by home producers of CBD oil, this simple extraction method requires raw plant material to be decarboxylated.
This version of CBD oil is highly perishable, so it must be stored in a cold, dark place in order to keep for longer.
Due to its shorter shelf-life, this process of CBD extraction isn’t great for commercial production. But it’s safe for individual CBD consumers.
